Wo Hop, located at 17 Mott Street in Chinatown, Manhattan was established in 1938. There are two locations for Wo Hop; upstairs and downstairs. I later learned that the upstairs part is for tourists and downstairs is for the ones who aren't afraid to eat in the basement of a Chinatown restaurant.
The menu at Wo Hop is extremely, extremely affordable and DELICIOUS. I went to the restaurant with my uncle and we had no idea that the servings would be so big too!
We got spring rolls which were so big cutting them in half equals the size of a normal roll you typically see. The roasted duck chow mei fun was very tasty. If you are a big fan of thin noodles, then the Chow Mei Fun is the way to go. When my uncle comes to visit, he's never really picky about where he wants to eat, but this time he was clear that he wanted a nice plate of authentic, hot, General Tso's Chicken. I think I exceeded his expectations with Wo Hop. Lastly, the Beef and Broccoli dish came with equal amounts of both. There were steamed dumplings too, but I might have eaten them before taking a photo.
The restaurant is small and the staff want you to eat, drink, take your pics and go. There is always a line around dinner time so they need a quick turnover. The staff was very polite the night we were there. Our waiter in particular was cracking jokes with us and engaging with us as we had difficulty choosing items from their vast menu. The restaurant is CASH ONLY, however, they do have an ATM on site but it's best to prepare ahead of time and avoid the fees. Our meal came out to around $60, including the food and three beers, so well reasonable.
I definitely plan to return to Wo Hop again. They stay open very late so after a night out in Nolita, SoHo, L.E.S. it's a great place to stop before heading home.
I'm so happy this restaurant survived through the perils of the pandemic and was able to open up to outdoor dining with heating for the winter season. I, however, no longer live in NYC, but this restaurant is a top recommendation for visitors and I'll be sure to visit them again soon.
